Padel Racket Weight and Balance Explained — Which Weight Is Right for You?

Written by Australian Padel Shop ·  Published  ·  Updated  ·  Prices and stock shown are live

Weight is how much the racket weighs. Balance is where that weight sits. Balance changes how heavy a racket feels far more than the number on the spec sheet does — a 370g head-light frame can feel lighter in play than a 355g head-heavy one.

Why the number on the box misleads you

Pick up two rackets in a shop and the heavier one feels heavier. Play with them for an hour and that can reverse completely, because what your arm actually feels is not mass — it is the effort of swinging mass at a distance. Move the same weight further from your hand and the racket feels dramatically heavier through the swing.

This is why balance deserves as much attention as weight, and gets a fraction of it.

Weight, in practice

Padel rackets run roughly 340g to 380g. Here is what the bands mean once you are actually playing:

  • Under 355g — quick hands at the net, easy to reposition late, comfortable across long sessions. Less free power; you supply more of it.
  • 355–365g — the broad middle, and where most all-round frames sit. If you have no strong preference, start here.
  • 365g and above — more mass behind the ball, better stability against a fast shot, more tiring. Rewards good timing and punishes fatigue.

Body size matters less than you'd expect. Playing frequency matters more. If you play three times a week, a heavier frame accumulates load on your elbow and shoulder in a way that a weekly hit never reveals.

Why we publish a range, not a number

Because manufacturers do. Padel rackets are moulded with foam and composite, and the finished weight varies. A frame stated at 365g will typically arrive somewhere between 355g and 375g. Every brand has this tolerance; most retailers quietly publish the midpoint as if it were exact.

We publish the range and label it ±10g. If you are particularly sensitive to weight, tell us when you order and we'll pick from stock rather than sending whichever one is on top.

Balance, in practice

Balance is measured as the distance from the butt of the handle to the racket's balance point. Higher number, more weight toward the head.

  • Low / head-light — the racket swings quickly and feels alive in the hand. Best for defence, volleys and fast exchanges at the net.
  • Medium / even — neutral. Does most things well and nothing spectacularly.
  • High / head-heavy — the head lags and then arrives, which is exactly what you want on a smash and exactly what you don't want when the ball comes back at you quickly.

The combination is what counts

Weight and balance interact, and the combination tells you far more than either figure alone:

  • Light and head-light — maximum manoeuvrability. The friendliest combination for a developing player or a sore arm.
  • Light and head-heavy — power without the fatigue of a heavy frame. Less stable against a hard shot.
  • Heavy and head-light — deceptively easy to swing, very stable. Often the choice of experienced control players, and frequently overlooked.
  • Heavy and head-heavy — the most powerful and the most demanding combination in the sport. This is what most professional frames are, and it is the wrong place for most club players to start.

Four frames from our shelf that sit at different corners of that grid — light and handle-biased on the left, heavy and head-heavy on the right. Prices are live.

Every product page lists the manufacturer's weight range and balance, and the compare tool puts three of them side by side.

Can you change it?

Yes, within limits, and only in one direction. Lead tape added to the frame moves the balance toward wherever you put it. Three grams at the top of the head is enough to feel. It is a cheap way to test whether you want a more head-heavy racket before buying one.

You cannot make a racket lighter, and you cannot move mass out of a frame that already has it. Buy the lighter frame and add, rather than buying heavy and hoping.
